Picture a procurement lead asking Perplexity which compliance platforms suit a mid-size bank. In seconds she has a sourced answer and a rough shortlist, and your brand is either in that answer or it is not. To earn that citation, you need pages Perplexity can crawl, passages that answer one question cleanly, and third-party sources that back up your claims. This guide explains where Perplexity fits in a purchase, how it appears to select sources, and what your team can do this quarter to show up in research you never get to see.
AI is now a routine part of buying. Forrester reports that 94% of business buyers use AI in the purchase process, and twice as many named generative AI or conversational search as a meaningful source than any other option. Gartner measured something narrower. In its survey of 645 B2B buyers, 45% used GenAI during a recent purchase, mainly to research vendors and products, and buyers drew on seven information sources on average.
Perplexity is not the largest tool in that mix. In G2’s survey of more than 1,000 software buyers, ChatGPT was the favorite of 47%, nearly three times any other model.
Its value lies in how it presents information. Perplexity places linked references beside its claims, which suits people who must defend a decision internally. The same Gartner research found 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps, and 51% said misleading information was more likely to come from GenAI than from a rep. Skeptical readers check the links, so a citation puts your evidence directly in front of them.
Perplexity has not published a citation formula, so treat every list of ranking factors, including this one, as informed inference. A useful working model has three checks.
The strongest public evidence on page-level edits comes from the KDD 2024 GEO paper. Tested on Perplexity itself, adding statistics lifted visibility by up to 37% and adding quotations by 22%, while keyword stuffing performed 10% worse than the baseline on one measure. These are 2024 experiments and engines have changed, but specific, attributed content remains a sensible bet.
Community and video sources carry more weight than many B2B teams expect. In Ahrefs’ September 2026 analysis of over 3.1 million US queries, Reddit held 21.6% of citations among the top 50 domains and YouTube held 20.8%. Forbes held 1.2% and LinkedIn 0.9%.
Read those numbers with care. They span all topics, so consumer queries pull the list toward retail, health and product reviews. We found no public dataset that isolates enterprise prompts, which makes your own testing more useful than any leaderboard. The data is also US only, and a prompt tested for buyers in Riyadh or Stockholm may surface a different set of domains.
Coverage you do not own appears to matter across AI tools. Muck Rack’s May 2026 What Is AI Reading? study put earned media at 84% of citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Perplexity sits outside that sample and Muck Rack sells PR software, so read it as a directional signal.
Buyers ask different questions at each stage. Use these illustrative prompts to find your gaps.
| Stage | Example prompt | Asset to build |
|---|---|---|
| Problem framing | Why do ERP migrations overrun at mid-size manufacturers? | Diagnostic guide with named causes and your own data |
| Shortlisting | Best SOC 2 compliant HR platforms for 5,000 staff | Category page with fit criteria, plus current review profiles |
| Comparison | Vendor A vs Vendor B for multi-country payroll | Honest comparison stating where a rival fits better |
| Risk check | Common complaints about Vendor A implementations | Public security, implementation and support documentation |
| Business case | Typical cost of replacing a legacy CRM | Pricing logic, cost ranges and a worked ROI example |
The last two rows are where vendor sites often go quiet. If your site says nothing about cost or complaints, Perplexity will answer from someone else’s page.
Run the same prompt set every month and record four things.
Referral clicks will undercount your impact. Forrester says 61% of business buyers use private AI tools supplied by their organization, and that activity may leave little trace in your analytics. Add a question about research sources to demo forms, and ask it again on discovery calls. Our guide to tracking AI citations across platforms covers the tooling side.
Perplexity citations are won before a rep hears about the deal. Take five recent losses, rebuild the prompts those buyers probably asked, and see who gets cited. That gap is your first content brief.

Start by confirming PerplexityBot can reach your pages. Then rewrite key sections so each one answers a single buyer question in its opening lines, supported by named figures and sources. Add first-party data that competitors cannot reproduce, and earn coverage in publications your category already trusts. Citations are never guaranteed, so test a fixed prompt set and improve the pages that keep missing out.
Neither tool wins outright. ChatGPT has the larger audience among software buyers, according to G2, so it deserves attention in almost every plan. Perplexity’s strength is its visible referencing, which helps enterprise buyers check claims quickly during B2B buyer research. Most vendors should cover both. Prioritize Perplexity first when your deals involve technical evaluators, procurement teams or compliance reviewers who need to verify and share evidence with colleagues.
It helps indirectly, but it offers no guarantee. Pages that rank well are usually crawlable, well structured and linked from other sites, and those qualities also suit Perplexity. Yet Perplexity runs its own crawler and assembles answers from passages that fit a specific prompt. A page can rank strongly and still go uncited if its answer is buried. Treat good SEO as the foundation, then tune each passage for direct extraction.
There is no reliable public benchmark. Technical fixes can apply quickly, as Perplexity says robots.txt changes may take up to 24 hours. Content edits vary by topic, competition and how often your pages are crawled. Third-party coverage usually takes longer because it depends on editors and analysts. Set a 90-day review window, compare your citation share against a baseline prompt set, and adjust the plan based on what actually moved.
Most brands that want visibility should not. Perplexity says PerplexityBot exists to surface and link websites in its results, and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Blocking it reduces your chances of appearing among cited sources. Keep private material behind authentication instead, since Perplexity-User, which fetches pages on request, generally ignores robots.txt. If legal or compliance teams object, block specific directories and leave public product and solution pages open.
